700+ at inaugural Student-Staff Assembly!
Over 700 students and staff, including representatives from UCU, UNISON and Unite, met to discuss the truth about University of Edinburgh finances, our opposition to course closures, and how to make our voices heard!
A stunning 700-800 students and staff gathered for the inaugural Student-Staff Assembly on Thursday 24 September. The pre-booked lecture theatre with a capacity of 300 was quickly overwhelmed, with the overflow filling another one of similar-size and a large teaching room, joining the meeting via livestream.
After hearing from the Joint Unions Finances Working Group, union representatives from UCU, UNISON and Unite, tutors, international students, and speakers on student housing, divestment from genocide, and Scottish independence, the Assembly broke into the following working groups to begin organising:
Reclaiming Learning (strike teach-out plans)
Tactics for All (collective, financial and legal tactics beyond bureaucracy)
Comms Strategy & Lobbying (getting the word out and shaping the debate)
Arts & Crafts (posters, banners, zines & graphics)
Welfare, Support & Resources (strike pay, union surgery for tutors and staff, community kitchen, visa questions)
