Subject: Concern Over Cuts to Staff

Dear Principal Mathieson,

I am writing to you as a [insert as appropriate – (incoming) student, parent, local resident, etc] to express my deep concern about the direction that senior management is taking with the ongoing £140 million cuts and refusal to rule out further mass redundancies, including compulsory ones. I am particularly troubled by the impact this will have on teaching quality, student support, and the overall academic experience at the University of Edinburgh.

I support the staff that are on strike this week and understand that they are doing so to protect the future of the university and the quality of the student experience it is able to deliver. It speaks volumes that they feel they have no option left but to take this step. Cuts of this scale - which would be the largest cuts ever made by a Scottish University - will harm research and teaching, increase workloads, and degrade the learning environment for everyone.

I urge you to listen to staff concerns, halt ongoing unjustified cuts, rule out further compulsory redundancies, and take a more considered, transparent approach to financial decision-making. The long-term health of the university and the experience of its staff and students depends on it.

Yours sincerely,

[Your Name]
